Protect Your Garage Floor In A Day
If you are looking for a quick home project that will look great and offer you protection for years to come then look into applying a garage floor coating one of these weekends. The average time it takes to completely treat your floor is about two half days. So you can clean and prepare the floor on the first morning and then install the coating on the second. This leaves both afternoons to do what you like: golf, watch sports, fish, or just sleep. And you won’t even feel guilty because you are having a good time.
The prep work is not very difficult in order to coat a garage floor but it does take some time. The first step is to move everything off the floor and set it outside. Next, broom the dirt and any loose material off the floor then use soap and water to clean it. You can scrub by using a floor broom as that allows you to put a lot of down pressure. If you have any oil or grease spots you will need to use a good degreaser and remove them.
Once the floor is clean, apply a thin film of water on the floor with a spray nozzle. Then see if there are water beads that form on any part of the floor. If there is, you will need to apply more degreaser as the beads indicate there is still contamination on the floor. If the entire floor beads then probably have a clear coat that must be removed before the epoxy coating will stick. To get it off you must use a weak muriatic acid solution. You can find this at your local home repair store.
After the floor is cleaned and prepped it just needs to sit and dry over night. You can add a heater if the days is not too warm or if there is a lot of humidity. Then spend the rest of the day having fun, you have my permission.
On day two you will roll out the floor coating after mixing the resin and the hardener. Only mix about enough to cover a six by six square at a time so it doesn’t get set up too fast. As you lay out the coating, be sure to cast the anti-slip medium, either chips or sand, on the surface so the floor is not too slick when you get done.
After the floor is covered you need to let it cure for about 18 hours before checking for hardness and don’t drive on it for about 3 days.
Now go out and enjoy the rest of your day off.
