What’s The Difference Between Garages and Carports Made of Steel?
When most people think of garages, they think of a structure that is attached to the side of a home or other building and is part of the building’s structure. They can be made out of a variety of materials but are usually made from wood frame construction like the rest of the building. Most people don’t think of garages as being made from steel.
But, nevertheless, there are plenty of steel garages out there used to house cars and other vehicles, such as trucks, buses, motorcycles and RVs. These garages are also often used for storage purposes as well. So, what’s the difference between garages that are made from steel and steel carports? Well, the main difference between a structure that is labeled as a garage and a carport has to do with how it is built.
A garage is typically built with four walls and a roof. The space inside is fully enclosed and usually has some type of door or doors on the front to allow entrance and exit in and out of the garage. A carport, on the other hand, is more often than not simply a set of support poles or posts that are utilized in order to support a covering or roof overhead. Some of these structures will also have one or more sides on them, in addition to the overhead covering, but they are not typically thought of as a fully enclosed structure with a set of doors used to get in and out of the interior space. Even when these structures have sides on them, there are usually at most three sides and not four, and the one opened side is used for entry and exit into the enclosed space.
So, while there may not seem to be a big difference between steel garages and carports in how they look, the main difference comes from how fully enclosed each structure is.
